What I’m Reading, Part 3 (The Pulps)

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

I’ve just started reading a book my wife bought me called The Chinatown Death Cloud Peril, by Paul Malmont. It’s a pulp-fiction type novel set in the ’30s starring all the old pulp writers, H.P. Lovecraft is in it, Walter Gibson (The Shadow), Lester Dent (Doc Savage), and L. Ron Hubbard. I’m only part way into the story but so far it’s pretty fun.

The sad truth for me, and why my wife bought me this book, is that as a kid, I was a huge Doc Savage fan. I guess I still am. I named my kid, Clark, after all. I’ve been slowly re-reading my way through all the old Doc Savage paperbacks I had. They’re fun for me but I’m afraid only from a nostalgic sense. Some of the stories are good but most just seem hastily written (which I guess they were), and the characters just do the same things over and over in each story. They’re definitely not as great as I remembered them. I guess that’s one of the great things about being a kid is that you can enjoy most anything without looking at it with a critical eye.
