Really Busy This Week
Thursday, March 13th, 2008I’ve been extremely busy at my “real job” this week so I’ll just write a quick post for today’s comic and since it’s my boss at work making me so busy, I’ll tell everyone what a jerk he is.
Ah, that’s not really true, he’s one of the coolest cats I know. His name’s Mohammad Riza and I’ve been working with him now for over nine years and at three different companies. He’s an incredible designer and an extremely talented artist. I wouldn’t attribute everything I know about design to him, but he’s definitely been a huge influence on me. You can see some of his sketchbooks on Flickr.
Head over there and check him out. It’s great stuff. And now back to work.

Wow. That’s a lot of birds. How long did this take to draw?

Hey Danny. You know this page (and the next couple) didn’t really take a lot longer than I usually work. Normally, it takes me about about the length of a CD, about 45 minutes to an hour, to draw each panel in pencil and about the same amount of time to ink it. The pencils for this page were actually really easy and went really fast. The inks took a bit longer though.
I probably work a bit slower than a lot of artists. It takes me about two days to pencil and ink a full page. I imagine if I worked at it full-time, I’d gain a little speed. I’m always amazed at people who can crank out a bunch of pages in a single day.

I’m glad to hear you say two days for a full page - I’m about the same (if I work hard, and stay up late!). Another lovely strip, by the way - love all the blues of the night sky and flapping birds.

Hey Garen! Great to hear from you. Staying up late is the key is the key to drawing, isn’t it? It’s those darn backgrounds that make us so slow. Actually, as well researched and detailed as your comics get, I’m amazed you’re able to work that quickly.
For anyone reading, I give Garen’s webcomic, The Rainbow Orchid, one of my highest ratings. If you haven’t seen it before, click on the link I have in my Great Comics column on the right. You’ll love it.

You’re very kind, Trade - thank you.
